Where Gen Z actually watches: build for the feed, not the TV slot
Gen Z and Alpha skip pre-roll and scroll past banners. To reach them you make video for Reels, TikTok and even Roblox, at the volume those channels eat.
A brand pays to reach a young audience and reaches the wrong one. The media plan buys TV, pre-roll and display, and the fifteen-to-twenty-five-year-old it wants has an ad blocker, no TV, and a thumb that clears a banner before it renders. The problem is rarely the money. It is aiming it at formats this audience has trained itself to ignore.
What they skip, and what they do not
Gen Z and Alpha skip pre-roll on the fifth second and scroll past display without a glance. What holds them is native short video in the feeds they already live in: TikTok, Reels, Shorts. They will watch a fifteen-second ad that reads as content, from an account that posts often, and they will pass one that reads as a TV spot dropped into a phone.
Even games count now. A branded world in Roblox holds a young player for minutes, not the second a pre-roll gets, because they chose to be there. The channel is not the problem. The format is.
Making video for the feed changes the brief
Feed-native video is a different object from a broadcast spot. It is vertical. It earns its first three seconds instead of assuming them. It comes in volume, because one post a month is invisible where the audience expects a steady stream. And it varies constantly, because the feed punishes repetition.
That brief is hard to fill with a traditional shoot. One hero film a quarter is the opposite of what the channel rewards. It is easy to fill with AI production, which is built for exactly this: many cuts, fast, cheap enough to post weekly and vary endlessly.
The practical move
Stop translating a TV idea into a phone. Start with the feed:
- Shoot vertical first, 9:16, designed for a thumb and a muted autoplay.
- Open on the hook, the three seconds that decide the scroll, and test ten of them.
- Post at volume, a steady stream rather than a launch and silence.
- Follow the audience into new rooms, including Roblox, where a world beats a banner.
Then measure it where it lives, with tracked links and promo codes, so you know which cut earned the customer.
